Khor Virap: View of Ararat
Our adventure begins with an early departure to Khor Virap (meaning “deep pit”). This iconic Armenian monastery, located in the Ararat Valley, is best known for its stunning view of the majestic Mount Ararat. We will learn about St. Gregory the Illuminator and his role in converting Armenia to Christianity. Our experienced guide will introduce you to fascinating historical facts and legends, starting from this first point of the program.
Road to Vayots Dzor and the Birds’ Cave
Next, we will head south to the picturesque Vayots Dzor region. En route, you can enjoy the scenery while our experienced driver ensures your safety and comfort. Our next stop is the Birds’ Cave (Areni-1), a prominent archaeological site. It is here that scientists discovered the world’s oldest leather shoe (over 6000 years), as well as the oldest winery.
Noravank: The Jewel Among Red Cliffs
We will continue our journey to the Noravank Monastery, a masterpiece of 13th-century Armenian architecture. This complex is situated in a narrow gorge framed by high, sheer red cliffs, creating an incredibly photogenic and spiritual backdrop. We will explore its unique two-story churches and bas-reliefs.
Areni: Wine Tasting and Day’s End
To conclude the day, we will visit a local winery in the village of Areni. This region is considered the birthplace of winemaking, and it is the perfect place to sample the famous Armenian wines made from indigenous grape varieties. A wine tasting awaits you, providing a wonderful final chord to your journey.
