Join an intensive group excursion to Armenia’s main treasures. You will see the legendary Khor Virap Monastery with the best view of biblical Ararat. We will visit the only preserved pagan temple, Garni, and the UNESCO-listed cave monastery, Geghard. Also, enjoy the picturesque natural landscapes near the Azat Reservoir.
Khor Virap: At the Foot of Ararat
The excursion begins with a trip to the Ararat Valley to the Khor Virap Monastery (“Deep Pit”). This landmark is associated with the Christianization of Armenia and offers the most postcard-perfect view of Mount Ararat. You will have the opportunity to descend into the underground pit where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years.
Azat Reservoir: Gorge Panorama
Next, our route lies towards Garni, but we will make a stop at the Azat Reservoir. A picturesque view of the water surface and the deep gorge of the Azat River opens up here. This is the perfect spot for panoramic photos of the natural landscape before we head to the historical monuments.
Garni: Pagan Temple of the Hellenistic Era
We will visit the Garni Temple (1st century AD), the only preserved pagan temple in Armenia. Built in the Greco-Roman style, this temple is dedicated to the sun god Mithra. Our professional guide will tell you about the Hellenistic architectural style, the purpose of the temple, and the Roman baths with mosaics. Here you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the Azat River Gorge.
Geghard: UNESCO Cave Monastery
The final point of the route is Geghard Monastery (UNESCO), whose name translates as “Monastery of the Spear”. The complex is partly carved directly into the rocks, creating amazing acoustics and a mystical atmosphere. We will explore its cave churches, cells, and famous khachkars, which are a hallmark of Armenian medieval art.
